Max Carney

Max specializes in supporting adults dealing with anger management and substance abuse concerns. She has experience working in an all-male substance abuse center in Detroit doing individual and group therapy. Max graduated from the Michigan School of Psychology with a master’s in clinical psychology. MSP trains its students with the Humanistic approach, which can be seen in how she approaches clients. Along with the Humanistic approach, she also utilizes Gestalt Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing to help her clients reach self-actualization and flourish outside of therapy.

Clinical Approach

Max works with adult individuals and approaches therapy holistically, utilizing accurate empathy, unconditional positive regard, and congruence to assist her clients in achieving their goals. They come from a holistic approach that encourages therapists to understand and welcome the individuality of clients and the complexities of human experiences. No two individuals are the same and should not be treated as such, that is why she creates individualized treatment plans to help her clients achieve their personalized goals.

Max utilizes Humanistic, Gestalt, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI) to help uplift clients in building stress management tools, help regulate emotions, and achieve self-actualization.

In therapy, Max strives to build a therapeutic alliance that will assist the clients in achieving their therapeutic goals and feel proud of the hard work they put into themselves. Her priority is to create a safe space for clients to gain insight into their thoughts and behaviors. Through this, Max can help her clients establish healthy thought patterns, act less impulsively, and feel more in control of their lives.

Overall, Max is committed to helping her clients feel more in control of their behaviors and live fulfilling lives. They understand starting therapy can be a difficult endeavor. Max strives to build a strong relationship with her clients to assist them in cultivating a healthy mindset so her clients no longer feel as if they are battling themselves but instead feel whole.

ABOUT MAX

Max strongly believes that therapy is client-driven and the therapist is to walk beside them in their journey. They are driven by the mindset that anyone and everyone should have access to mental health resources and receive help. Max does not believe an individual needs a mental health diagnosis to receive therapy. There are many daily challenges an individual experiences therapy is a great way to make those challenges less of a burden.

Outside of work, Max enjoys hiking with her partner, playing with her pets, trying new restaurants/ foods, and playing Dungeons and Dragons with her friends and family. She likes to engage in her community and is currently on a research team examining the implications of a scarcity mindset and how it affects an individual’s engagement with climate change.
