Dr. Sportsman specializes in assessment and treatment of adolescents and young adults to promote social/emotional wellness and academic success. She also provides support and guidance for parents.
Dr. Sportsman enjoys a diverse career as a Licensed Psychologist in Michigan and a Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP). She graduated with honors from Lawrence University in Wisconsin and was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. Since earning her PhD in School Psychology from Michigan State University in 2011, she has worked at many levels in the schools, including system change leadership. She has worked with children of all ages and has practiced high school psychology for over 12 years. Her experience has instilled a deep understanding of school systems and the many ways schools support students, including special education processes. Dr. Sportsman also enjoys teaching and supervising school psychology interns and child/adolescent psychiatry fellows at Michigan State University. Dr. Sportsman is a member of the American Psychological Association and the National Association of School Psychologists.
Personal interests include violin, travel, books, movies, and German language. She especially treasures time with her family, including her husband, daughter, and son.
Skilled in establishing trusting relationships with clients, Dr. Sportsman is a calming presence and a caring listener. She specializes in working with teens who may be struggling with life adjustments, school stress, social and emotional difficulties, learning-related challenges, and associated diagnoses. She provides psychoeducational assessment for diagnostic clarity and to inform treatment recommendations. Drawing on strategies from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Solution-Focused Therapy, she helps clients establish healthy thinking and behavior patterns that will allow them to reach their goals and live their best life. She helps teens to develop executive functioning skills and growth mindset to promote school success.
Dr. Sportsman is committed to supporting parents through psychoeducation, behavior management coaching, and encouraging parent wellness. She helps parents understand school processes and collaborate effectively with schools to support their child.
