You Don’t Have to NEED Therapy to Benefit from Seeing a Therapist

by Kara Ferreira

It’s a common misconception that you have to need therapy in order to benefit from meeting with a trained therapist. Therapy is misperceived as only being prescribed for individuals with mental health issues ranging from mild to severe, but it can truly benefit everyone.

Therapy can be an especially important tool for individuals who are looking to increase their performance – at work, in an athletic pursuit, or even in their interpersonal relationships.

According to Psychology Today, these are some reasons why people might choose to explore therapy:

  1. They want to improve their self-acceptance.

  2. They want to maintain and improve the state of their marriage.

  3. They want to make sure they’re the best parent they can possibly be.

  4. They want to excel at work and in their career.

  5. They want to understand their life’s purpose and find greater fulfillment.

  6. They want to improve their ability to forgive and move on.

Therapy can also provide an hour of time on a regular basis to focus on yourself and your emotions. It’s a dedicated time to check in on your goals and your progress, with the help of someone who can assist you with mental blocks and other issues that may be dampening your results.  Think of it as part of your self-care regimen.

Seeing a therapist can also help with many common life changes, such as divorce, becoming a parent, changing workplaces, and retirement. While these transitions are common, having someone to help you navigate them can make a big difference.

If you’re considering seeing a therapist, you might be wondering what psychotherapy actually is. While there are many types of psychotherapy and methods of treatment that a therapist may use, the primary methods of treatment use dialogue. That’s it – talking! In each session, you speak with your therapist who provides a safe, non-judgmental and neutral environment, in order to workshop issues and events that come up in your life.
